ကျိၣ်စ့တၢ်ဆီၣ်ထွဲမၤစၢၤဟဲခီဖျိလၢ ဟံၣ်ဖိဃီဖိတၢ်တိာ်ကျဲၤလီၤဆီလၢမံၣ်နံၣ်စိထၣ်တၢ်အိၣ်ဆူၣ်အိၣ်ခ့ျဝဲၤကျိၤ (Family Planning Special Projects at the Minnesota Department of Health) န့ၣ်လီၤ.
The Karen Family Planning Program is committed to teaching Karen community members about reproductive health, child spacing, and related topics. KOM partners with WellShare International to provide culturally-specific health education and resources to refugees from Burma, healthcare providers and other professionals serving the community. KOM and WellShare host community-based classes that are taught in Karen language. The program also seeks to bridge the gap between health care services and Karen patients. The program works with providers and professionals to increase cultural understanding and helps Karen patients become more comfortable discussing health topics with their doctor.
Postpartum Education and Counseling
As part of this partnership, KOM and WellShare International support newly postpartum women (0-8 weeks following a live birth) and their families.
Our staff provide education and counseling related to:
- Benefits of child spacing
- Contraceptive methods
- Preventing unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Couple communication related to child spacing and reproductive health
Newly postpartum women will receive follow-up related to:
- Recent family planning and reproductive health
- Recent postpartum visit(s) with their provider
- Obtaining a method of choice
- Questions or unmet needs related to family planning or reproductive health resources, care, or services.
Talk to your healthcare provider to get a referral and get connected with Hsa Hser Ku, Community Health Educator at the Karen Organization of Minnesota, for a home visit. Women will also receive a $100 incentive after completing the program.
