Marshall Spotlight: Leadership Cohort Begins

The Karen Leadership Cohort in Marshall held its first meeting in October with eight Karen participants. The purpose of this cohort is to prepare Karen individuals to take on leadership roles within the Karen community and local government. Each monthly meeting will feature a guest speaker to discuss how they lead and their role in leadership. This month the mayor of Marshall will present to the group. They will also have people from the county, local businesses and institutions (banking, medical and educational) talk with the group. The first meeting centered on how leadership is a blending of many cultural leadership qualities. At that meeting, they talked about what it means to be a leader in Native American culture.

The cohort members are also in discussions with the city and schools about how to expand the base of Karen interpreters in Marshall. The members hope to use some of their assets to increase the number of certified interpreters in the Marshall area.
