Kyaw Kyaw Htwe is a Karen refugee from Mae La Camp, Thailand. He moved to the United States in 2007 with his family, and started school here in the fourth grade at Como Park Elementary. After graduating from Humboldt High School in 2016, Kyaw Kyaw continued his education at the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and a minor in Peace Studies. Kyaw Kyaw currently lives in Saint Paul, MN with interests in sustainable living, environmental justice, and education.

Kyaw Kyaw has worked with youth in the local community through TRIO Upward Bound, YouthCARE, and Camp Sunrise.

He shares, “In the summer of 2020, I worked with TRIO Upward Bound as a Bridge Assistant for an online Cultural Anthropology course. As a Bridge Assistant, I created lesson plans and activities, I worked with students on their assignments, study guides, and papers. I hosted office hours to provide time and space for students who needed extra support in the course. I taught myself new online software to ensure a smooth transition into virtual teaching.” In the summer of 2019, he interned with YouthCARE, a non-profit organization that does tremendous work for youth living in low-income communities and foster care in St. Paul/Minneapolis area. Kyaw Kyaw also interned as a camp counselor at Camp Sunrise, where he educated campers about environmental justice and sustainable living practices through outdoor exploration.

“These experiences gave me the chance to be a professional support system for students both in and out of the classrooms. They also confirmed my commitment to enriching students’ lives through education and positive mentorship, in which I can bring to my new role,” explains Kyaw Kyaw, “I am excited to be working as a Youth Development Coordinator here at KOM.”
