ESL Tutor

Name of agency and statement of purpose:  The Karen Organization of Minnesota’s (KOM) mission is to build on the strengths of refugee and immigrant communities and remove barriers to achieving economic, social, and cultural wellbeing.

Title: ESL Tutor

Purpose/objective: In KOM’s ESL Class, Karen and other refugees from Burma learn basic English skills in a classroom environment. The goal of the ESL Tutor is to assist the teacher in providing a supportive class environment for students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help the instructor with teaching lessons
  • Lead small group activities
  • Tutor students one-on-one

Time commitment: Available at least two hours per week during the daytime (Monday – Thursday, 9:30am – 11:30am; 12:00 – 1:00pm) and commit to a 2-month minimum volunteer period

Location: KOM’s Office

Qualifications: Patient, flexible and self-motivated college students or adults who have a passion to teach English as a second language and other valuable skills to students with limited English proficiency

How to apply/contact: Please complete KOM’s Volunteer Application online or contact Suzanne Olive to receive a paper application. Volunteers must have attended the ESL Tutor Pre-Service Training at the Minnesota Literacy Council (or a similar training) before starting to volunteer. KOM will also connect the ESL Tutor with instructors from Fairview Community Center.
