Community Events

In Minnesota, refugees from Burma host traditional celebrations throughout the year to bring the community together and keep the Karen culture alive. These celebrations typically involve dancing, speeches, food, music, sport tournaments, and other special activities specific to each event. Community members dress in traditional clothing to show respect for their culture. These events are open to the public and hosted by community leaders in the Karen, Karenni, and Mon communities. In the Karen community, events are usually organized by the Karen Community of Minnesota or the Karen Culture Organization of Minnesota.
