Employment Counselor

Job Location: Karen Organization of Minnesota| 2353 Rice St., Suite 240| Roseville, MN 55113

Status: Full-time, 40 hours/week, occasional nights & weekends

Salary: $19.00-$21.00 per hour

Position Summary:

To recruit and support eligible refugees and asylees into KOM’s employment and financial coaching services. Support participants in enhancing work readiness skills and financial literacy through one-on-one coaching and leading group workshops. Complete participant assessments, establish employment and financial goals with participants, and ultimately assist clients with finding sustainable employment while providing on-going coaching to help participants take steps and access services that will help them increase income and build wealth. This is a data-entry heavy position. Anticipated 15-25% of time will be spent on enrollment and service documentation in multiple data systems including conducting recurring needs and progress assessments, case noting all contact with participant, creating and updating goal plans, securing consent forms, documenting service progress, etc.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Able to speak, read and write fluently in English and Karen (Pwo or Sgaw), Karenni, or Burmese
  • Minimum 1-year experience in employment services or financial coaching
  • Willingness to attend financial coaching training, learning how to pull credit reports, and learning topics needed to lead financial literacy workshops
  • Experience maintaining records using database software
  • Able to work independently and build long-term relationships with clients and employers
  • Valid driver’s license with reliable vehicle, proof of insurance and clean driving record. Must be willing to use personal vehicle to provide transportation for clients.

Required Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, & Behavior):

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the culture of different refugees from Burma
  • Competency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and experience with any of the following data systems highly desired: Workforce One, Salesforce, Apricot, or MRIS
  • Comfort with speaking in public and interacting with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work with diverse partners in education, employment, and human services
  • Open communication and good listening skills
