Community Health Educator

Status: Full-Time Position (40 hours/week)
Salary Range: $19.00-$22.00/hour depending on qualifications
Location: Hybrid between office/remote sites in twin cities metro and virtually from home
Reports to: Program Manager

Position Summary:

The Karen Organization of Minnesota (KOM) is seeking a bilingual (Karen-English) professional with a passion for public health to fill the position of Community Health Educator.  The Community Health Educator will lead a variety of public health education activities for refugees from Burma in the St. Paul area.  They will also provide outreach and assistance to help people enroll in health insurance programs through MNsure.  This position offers an opportunity to collaborate with several partners in government, nonprofit, and health care agencies and to provide education about a wide variety of topics to help refugees from Burma be healthy.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize and facilitate Karen-language workshops for adults from Burma on a variety of health-related topics, including mental health, children’s health, family planning, COVID-19, and health insurance
  • Collaborate with public health officials, clinic staff, and other partners to develop presentations
  • Create and translate materials, flyers, other important health related information into Karen
  • Recruit community health workshop participants
  • Follow up with client referred by other agencies
  • Provide transportation and interpreting for workshop participants as needed
  • Conduct outreach including presentations, special events, and print materials to educate refugees from Burma to understand mental health related issues, family planning and provide available resources.
  • Assist clients to enroll in health insurance programs through the MNsure online system
  • Track project outcomes, including number of workshop participants, changes in knowledge and health behaviors, and enrollments in health insurance programs
  • Attend regular staff meetings, program meetings and partnership meetings

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Able to speak, read, write, and type fluently in English and Karen. Additional language abilities (i.e. Karenni, Burmese, Chin, Mon, Thai) are a plus.
  • At least two years of experience working in adult education, health care, and/or social services or education/certification related to public health field.
  • Able to give public presentations in Karen and/or English and talking about sensitive health issues
  • Knowledge and familiarity with nonprofit organizations, public health, social services, and resources in Minnesota
  • Competency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint & database applications
  • Experience maintaining case files and case notes
  • Good time management and problem-solving abilities
  • Flexibility and ability to adapt in a changing environment
  • Strong people skills across class, religion, culture, age, and gender
  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license and auto insurance required. Must be able to use personal vehicle to transport clients and travel to project meetings.

COVID Protocols:

KOM requires employees to be vaccinated as a condition of employment, subject to reasonable accommodation required by law. All vaccination doses must have been received at least fourteen days prior to starting employment. KOM requires and provides masks, social distancing, sanitizes common services regularly and is currently open to in-person services to vaccinated clients.
