Bilingual Social Service Coordinator (Karen/English)

Status: Full time with benefits

Salary: $17.00-$20.00/hr. DOQ

Scheduling: Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00, with some flexibility to attend evening/weekend appointments

Position Summary:

The Karen Organization of Minnesota seeks a bilingual (Karen/English) professional who is passionate about helping refugees through all stages of life to join our team as a Social Services Coordinator. This position will support refugees in the Twin Cities through two programs: New Arrival Social Services (70% of time) and MNsure Program (30% of time).

The Coordinator will conduct outreach and recruit eligible participants into both programs: 1) Under New Arrival Social Services, the Coordinator will work in close coordination with a network of providers in the Twin Cities metro to find and assist refugees/asylees resettling in Minnesota; 2) Under the MNsure program, the Coordinator will conduct outreach and enrollment of immigrant populations to make sure they maintain their health insurance coverage.

Under both programs the Coordinator will use assessment tools to provide tailored case management services for families and connect them to the resources and supports they need.  All services the Coordinator provides will be documented across multiple databases.  The Social Service Coordinator will be highly accessible to community by staffing consistent weekly walk-in hours at KOM and partner agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete intake, assessment, and service plans for refugees, asylees, or individuals with certain humanitarian protection status
  • Coordinate client referrals for a wide variety of social, cultural, and educational services
  • Provide case management, transportation, and interpreting to ensure clients receive access to community support services including employment services, housing, health insurance, immigration, legal services, childcare, adult English language classes, community-based social support networks, and other basic needs.
  • Conduct MNsure outreach and education activities
  • Screen and assist individuals with MNsure applications and renewals
  • Regularly contact clients via phone and home visits to monitor progress and address emerging concerns
  • Maintain detailed client files and case notes documenting activities in secure online databases
  • Participate in regular staff and program meetings
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Karen) required
  • Valid MN Driver’s License with proof of insurance and good driving record required. Must be able and willing to use personal vehicle to transport clients (transportation of clients is suspended during COVID).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in case management, refugee resettlement, interpreting, and/or health-related fields
  • Competency using MS Office, internet, and database applications for writing, record keeping, reporting, and research
  • Knowledge and familiarity with community services and resources in the Twin Cities metro area
  • Understanding of Karen culture and local community networks
  • Understanding of data privacy requirements and ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Proven ability to make connections and build relationships with refugee communities and diverse individuals
